SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

FEBRUARY MEETING OF COMMITTEE The February meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held in the school last week and was presided over by Mr. A. E. Jeffrey. Others present were Messrs. L. J. Bowler (secretary), E. Barber, I. Peni, E. T. Wilson, S. Free and Mrs. C. Stern. The acting-head teacher, Miss Shanks, and Mrs. Ward and Mr. D. Aitchison were also present. I Miss Shanks reported on small repairs which needed doing and stated that Mr. Richard Lind and ■Miss W. Flemming were on the staff as relieving -teachers. Mrs. Ward made a request for some school equipment for the children's use. Mention was made of the school 'grounds and it was asked if more jroom could be made available to the girls as a play area, as they had considerablv less than the boys; A request /was also made as • to whetheri.it 'wduld be possible to ihave the flower beds and borders ' revived. Two of the committeemen offered contributions towards planting the flower beds and borders. It was decided to hold the annual school picnic at the Foxton Beach I o'n • the tentative date of Saturday, February 22. Lists will be open to the public for contributions to defray the costs of transportation of the children and providing sxtras for them. A letter was received from the Education Board stating that from 30 applications Mr. F. C. Burtt, head of the intermediate department at Dotorua, had been appointed to fill the position of headmaster, subject to the committee's approval; likewise Miss A. Clayton, of the Levin School, had been appointed assistant mistress. ' Messrs. E. T. Wilson and E. Barber were directed to be the visiting committeemervduring the month of February. It was moved that the Education Board be approached to have the telephone installed as a party line from the school house to the school office. ___________ ___
