REPLY TO STRIKERS
Received Fridav, 10.-10 p.m. ' SYDXEY, Feb. 7. The action of engineers and litters at the Chullora workshops in striking over non-payment for Anniversary Day, was uiireasonable and a breacli of l'aith tollowiug the concession he liad allowed tlieni, said the _ Commissioner of Railways, Alr. T. .T. Hartigan, today. This and other workshops, he said, were duo foi a fortnight 's leave in January and as this period included Anniversgrv Day, leave would extend to one fortnight and a day. At their own retpiest the men had been given u holidav 011 December 27 in heu of the extra day with the annuai leave. Amalgamated Engineering Union fitters refused work 011 Australia Day because they sav it was in conflict with union policy. Tliev were told as they had alreadv been paid for a holidav, they would lose a day 's pav if they did not work on Australia Day. Alr. Hartigan said that Ihe truculent few causing the troulile had so far refused to date their claims.
