TIME PREVENTS AUSTRALIAN VICTORY Received Thursday, 7.50 p.m. ADELAIDE, Feb. 6. Compton and Evans held up the Australian bowiers throughout the morning spssion in the fourth cricket test t'o take the seore to 340, .giving England a lead of 313 runs. Compton cornpleted his second ceutury in the match, being only the fourth batsman to do . so in British- Australian tests. He batted 279 minutes for the century, hit•ting ten fours in oue of the best and most patient pcrformances seen . in lirst class cricket for a long timo. For dogged determinatipn Evans' knock would be hard to beat. He'was at the wickets for 95 minutes before opening his scoring. Hammond made an ainazing move in closing the English innings. He allowed Compton and Evans to go to the wickets after lunch. Then oue ball was bowled by Lintlwall and the innings closed. The only reason for the action was to ga'in a ten minutes brealt between innings. Australia was left with 195 minutes to bat to score 314 runs to win. Australia made no attempt to. jget runs to win. Nevertheless Morris gave a very free display of batting untiJ tea. With Harvey he put on 99 in 90 minutes. He scored at a run a minute rate for the lirst lialf-hour but faded away as Harvey began to take strike. The seore took only 48" minutes to reach the half-eentury. Morris took 68 minutes for his lirst 50. Interest had gone out of the game by tea because then it was evident the Australiau batsmen were out only for practice. Morris was the star of the Australiau batting. Opening out strongl.v after tea he trounced the English bowling to record his second century for the game. lle took 124 minutes for his runs, hitting ten fours. It was a reeorU for , all tests for two players to score an individual hundred in each innings. Morris is the lirst Australiau to perform the feat in Australia. He holds another record because he is the only piaver to ^ reak into lirst class cricket with separate hundreds in each innings. This wai! done aguinst queensland lor New fcjouth Wales in 194U-4I. Bradniau settled down quickly after a streaky start and took only 32 minutes to add 50 in the partnership with Morris, Australia looked to have an outside chance when runs caine at a hurricane rate but the scoring slackened later.
