FORMER TARANAKI TRAINER IN N.Z.

A former Taranaki trainer, Jack Fryer, is paying a short visit to New Zealand and is at pr.esent in Taranaki. He is oue of the few trainers to have won two Melbourne Cups. His lirst success was with Wotan and his spcohd with Skipton. Before se'tting up at Melbourne, Fryer had a good run of success in New Zealand (eomments ''Hurry On" of the Taranaki Daily News). He trained Cold Steel when he woa the Taranaki

and Wanganui Cups, aud Fryer always maintains that if Cold Steel could have been produced in a Melbourne Cup in the same order as he was when he won the Wanganui Cup there would have have been little doubt about the Melbourne Cup result. Fryer also trained Bright Glow, a good mare, throughout her career. He won a Great Northern Steeplechase with Copey, a Great Northern Hurdles with Staunchion and many good races with Onewhetu, Gaine Carrington and Peter Jackson. He has always had a big string at Caullield, and in additiou to a Melbourne Cup he won the V.R.C. Derby and a Caullield Cup. Fryer also trained the Australiau Hurdles vvinner. Doumint, in 1945. Fryer stated that the control of rac ing at Melbourne is very strict and the stipendiary stewards have wide powers that they do not hesitate to use. Lt is a conimon thing for sainples of the blopd, saliva and urine of horses to be taken directly after a race, and if all is not in order it is a serious matter for the connections of the horse.,
