GOOD RAINMAKING TESTS
Received Thursday, 11.10 p.m. SYDNEY, i'Cb. 6. Rain teemed from clouds west of * the Blue Mountains after they had befen treated "by a team of scientists flying in an R.A.A.F. Liherator. The rainmakers refuse to he juhilant, however. They say that the tests- so far have heen satisfactory hut that a lot of work lies ahead hefore anything definite can he announced. "We know full well that we ean produce good rain given favourable cioud formation," said Dr. E. B. Kraus, "hut nohody has the foggiest idea how often we ean he suceessftil. This is essential hefore we ean say it is an eeonomical proposition. Apart i'rom requiring deep cloud heavy with water, we know it must reach several tnousands of feet above freezing level. As far as we know this is the hasic requirement so that rainmaking in Central Australia without this cloud formation would be out of the question. ' ' The tests so far have involved shovelling quantities of dry ice into the tops of clouds and checking the results by ohservation and radar. Por each experiment the dry ice has cost less than £10 hut Liberators cost ahout £400 per flight.
