Miller was the hero of the Australian batting with a sparkling display before lunch when the burning sun made conditions very trying. He scored 50 in the ffrst 40 minutes of play, The Victorian opened the day sensationally by hitting the" first ball from Wright — a no ball — into the members;' Stand for six. Flaying the bowling he played the star role in the flfth wicket partnership for 150 with Johnson. . Miller took 151 minutes for his 'century, his first in Test cricket. In doing so he showed every shot in the book. His late eutting was powerful and well timed while his driving was terriffe. Johnson took 115 minutes to reach' 50 in playing a fine hand. Tallon and MeCool .went quickly but l^indwall and Dooland helped the score along. Dooland and Miller put on 63 for the ninth wickeb in 58 minutes. The Australian innings closed within two minutes of the tea interval giving Australia a lead of 27 runs. on the first innings. Hutton opened brightly wfien Engiand began the second innings. He scored two fours in the first over from -vliiler to give him 12 in eight minutes. A thundcrstorin was brealcing as the innings began. Rain stopped play and fhen play was held up for 24 minutes. Hutton scored the first 20 runs on the board and tben Washbrook took a hand. He lifted Lindwal over the square-leg fence in scoring 20 while Hutton was adding two. Lindwall took a hattering, 24 runs being scored off his first three overs. Realising the need for. quick scoring the Englishmen took only 26 minutes to put 53 runs on Ihe board-. Hutton took 57 minutes to reach 50, hitting seven fours. Bradman made a quick bowling change with Lindwall, Miller, Toshack and Dooland attempting to eheck the scoring but Avas unsuccessful until late in the day when Toshack stopped the ffow of runs, Tn 82 minutes batting before stumpa, England scored 96 without loss.
