BOWLING TOURNEY OPENS

PLAY STARTS IN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. One of the warmest and most pleasant days of this summer welcomed bowlers from all over the Dominion to the first New Zealand championships in Wellington since 1940. After light overnight rain general conditions could not have been better. The Mayor, Mr. Will Appleton, officially opened the tourney. The president of the association, Mr. Thomas .Lock, eulogised the yeoman service of the secretary, Mr. Charlie Ingram. Among the well-known names in the lists, J. F. Hosking (Parnell) was beaten today 24 — 14 and C. Spearman (Christchurch) and F. Livingstone (Onehunga) both won their first round games by 19—15 , There are 616 entrants in the; singles, which is being played in 51 sections. Play is on the automatic two-life system, and there will be two lifers and 125 one-lifers to continue on Wednesday. The pairs have drawn 519 entries and the fours 304.
