MARCHING ASSOCIATION

SUCCESSFUL SHANNON DANCE The Shannon committee of the Horowhenua Marching Association held a very successful dance in the Druids' Hall on Thursday evening. Apart from the large representation of Shannon dancers, the buses from Otaki, Levin and Foxton were filled to capacity and dancing was enjoyed to an early hour. The ladies of the parents' committee provided a most enjoyable supper and the addition' of ice cream and solf drinks helped to keep those present cool in spite of the very warm conditions. Mr. S. Chester was M.C. During the evening, Mr. N. Birch, president of the local committee, took the opportunity to welcome the visitors and extend thanks to all those who had made the function such an outstanding success. Mr. Birch also extended congratulations to the local girls on the excellent progress they had made with their marching, and wished them every success at the Horowhenua champi onships on Saturday. Prior to the dance the two local teams paraded in the'main street and gave a marching demonstration. In spite of the fact that the teams were marching without music, an excellent dispiay was given. The Broadway teae, was the - first to fall in and, under the leadership of Miss R.ona Birss, marched from the post office along Plimmer Terrace to Ballance Street, where a demonstration of counter marching and an about turn was given, returning to the post office to repeat the counter march. The Broadway team was followed by Birch's, under the leadership of the team''S • deputy-leader, Miss JVL Cloug'h. This (team completed the same march as the first tearrij with the addition of one or two drill movements; The public turned out in force to see the girls in action. Arrangements are in hand to stage a full dispiay by the seven teams in the Horowhenua Association at Shannon in the near future.
