CATCHES PATCHY BUT FISH IN GOOD CONDITION

ROTORUA, Jan. 10. Fishing in Rotorua although patchy has yielded some catclies of very vvell conditioned iish. Auglers have not beeu getting large bags but the sport has been good, says Mr. S. McNamara, C'onservalor of Fish and Oame. Lake Roto-iti around the bays has yielded , weil-conditioned (ish, auglers taking up 1 to 411) and 31b, the largest of which was 1)1 b. Fishing at Hamurana outlel ! Iias been patchy, but the lish were in good condition while at the mouth of the Awahou the fishing is also good, the largest lish taken there being 811b. Auglers who have been fishing at ; I.ake Okataina have taken some iine ! trout and the lake promises good sport | later. There have been oue or two nice , catclies taken around Mourea, the | largest of which was 711b. ■ Trolling ' parlios generally have not been meeting with much success in the Rotorua' district. The condition of tlie lisli at the 1 nortlicru end of Lake Taupo is good . although not iiiauy large (ish have been | taken even by trolling parties. "lii j Ihe Whanganui Stream lishiiig has j been partieularly bright. Most of the ' lish are feeding on snielt and some wonderful rises have beeu seen duriug Ihe day. The southeni end of Taupo and Tokaanu has gone oll' considerablv . during Ihe past few days. At Moloupa ; and iu the Tau rauga-Taupo urea Ihe sport has been good and some niee catclies have been taken from these areas. There has not yet been «• g.reat niu o.f lish in Ihe Waikato where in most j cases the fishing is hard, but l.hose ; taken were all in good condition. At j Waikare nice small bags of lisn up to 121b are reported. Thcr'e > are not many auglers in this area. j Fishing herc is improving and should j be botter witliin the next few weeks. | The condition of the lish in the Whaka- I tane area is rather poor with low J water and liigh tomperatures. Auglers here report large numbers of uuder n in i t fish. Tn the Tarawera River a few reasonable catclies are reported. I ti the lower Rangitaiki ne&r Fclge"iinibe there is a small number of trout but none ha's been caught s'o far. Auglers in the Opotiki area are fow and far between and fishing generally is not easy. There have been no large ,-bags but reasonable sport is available both from spoon in the Tarawera and the fiy in the Waimana and Whakatane.
