CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29. A fighting eentury by A. M. Roberts and dour defence by several other batsmen, saved Otago from outright defeal in the Plunket Shield match against Canterbury eoncluded at Lancaster Park yesterday. When play began Otago was 185 runs behind on the hrst innings and before the Canterbury total was reached six wicket: fell and Otago still had niore than three and a lialf hours to play. However, Roberts, playing one of the best innings of his career, and L. Watt, who defended t'or two hours in rnaking 25, added 97 for the seventh wicket. They were not separated until nearly 4.30 p.m. At that time Otago was 79 ahead and Canterbury neederl three very quick wiekets to have the chanec of hitting off tbe runs but L. Smith did not look lilte getting out and Canterbury 's prospeets were dealt a iinal blow by rain boginning to fnlT at
