GRAVE COAL SHORTAGE

Received Sunday, 9.16 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 29. It is imderstood that an emergency Cahinet meeting is called for tomorrow to consider the "grave situation" which has arisen hecanse of the coal shortage, says the News of the World political correspondent. At the present rate of production it is touch and go whether hundreds of factories will have to close. Cahinet will have to take drastic emergency measures and it is likely it will decide to cut altogether supplies for factories making luxury goods. It all depends on the miners. There is extreme disquiet in Cahinet over Christmas ahsenteeism among the miners. The Sunday Express says ahsenteeism was as high as 80 per cent. at some mines. The four railway companies hold only two to three days' sijpply of coal at locomotive depots. agginst , a normal stock of a month's r'equiremeilts.
