Six naval ratings, including livc men convicted for armed holdups, escaped from Balmoral Naval delontion barracks on Nortli Shorc, Sydncv Harbuur, last niglit. Lato I?ist niglit and tliis morning 120 armed police were searching for the nien in the sciub aiouuil Tat'onga Park, Balmoral and Bradiey's llead. Five of the nien lecently cuinpletod sentenees ranging between Is month.s and two years and were awaitiug triul on eharges of desertion. The men cut their way through ihe libro eeiling oi the gaol lavatorv and tlien forced their way out througii the roof tiles. They rau about lifteen yards along the roof to ihe end of the building where thev dropped to tlie ground and made their escape aeross a brightly Iit road iu trout of the depot entrance. The guard who tried to stop them wns kuoeked down and had liis nose brokoii. Poliee and naval ratings wero quickI y jn action, helped by reports that the men were still nearby.
