DEATH DEALING DISEASE
Received Fridav, S p.m. LONDON, Dec. 20. As a preeaution against the gast.roiiites'tinal infection which caused Ihe deaths of 22 infants in Eeicestcrshire. and a number of others in difTerent parts of the country, adinissions to Huli Municipal Maternity Hospital liave b«en; susponded and Birkenhead Muni•ipal Hospital has been closed to visitors. Tho illness, which is officially described as epidemic diarrhoea of the newborn, is still not fully diagnosed. A New Zealand doctor, who has had mme experience of it, stated that tlie outbreak appeared to be due to some organism too small to be detected by irdinary laboratorv tests and which would rcquire further research. Cases >f tlie disease were known to have oc•urred during tlie war but the outbreaks on those occasions did not re■eive the same publicity as at present. It has been found that a complete clearance of tlie wards in which the disease has occurred and the special sterilisation of all equipment, has . generally served'lo check local dcvelopruent of tlie trouble.
