POLE CATCHES FIRE

NEED FOR CARE STRESSED The necessity of the public exercising extreme c?,re in , the lighting of bonfires was clearly indicated yesterday afternoon, when a large bonfire on the premises of Mr. J. Quinn, Queen Street, Levin, got out of control and set fire to a telegraph pole and surrounding grass bordering the road. But for prompt action by the Levin Fire Brigade, considerable damage might have resulted. Fortunately the pole, which earried overhead cable, sustained only superficial damage and the cable withstood the heat, otherwise 'a considerable number of subscribers would have been affected. The need for public co-operation and a greater realisation of the danger in regard to bonfires, particularly during the summer months, was stressed yesterday by the superintendent of the brigade, Mr. W. S. Salmons. He added that the public did not seem to be aware thqf a.pefmit was. necessary, before these fires could be lit.
