Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Taylor, of Queen Street, returned on Saturday from the South Island, where Mr. Taylor attended the annual communication of the Masonic Grand Lodge as part of the Hawke's Bay representation. Mr. J. Madden, former Deputy-Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, has died in Auckland at the age of 66. He joined the department in 1901 at Dunedin and later became Chief Postmaster in turn at Wanganui, Dunedin and Wellington. He was appointed Divisiopal Director in the General Post Office in 1939 and after being promoted to the deputy-director-generalship, retired in 1944. Mr. Madden will always be remembered by Post and Telegraph employees for his association with the department's joint advisory council. As first chairman of the council, it was his task to ensure the successful establishment -of the scheme. The excellent results which hove been achieved& since its inception in 1940 are largely due to his efforts.
