REVALUATION OF BOROUGH
deciston of council Resuming a discussion on Shannon 's rating system which was held over from the previous meetings the Shannon Borough Council, at its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, decided to make a revaluation pf the borough. Cr. Aitchison, in moving that the revaluation be carried out, said that it was time something was done, and he had come to the conclusion that' the only way to' satisfy the ratepayers was to have the revaluation, although he was quite eonvinced that many ratepayers who were eXpecting big reductions in the rates would be disappointed. Cr. Higgie, in seconding the motion, said that at the moment there was no encouragement offered to people wanting to build in Shannon. Under the present rating system the. rates on a house valued at over £1000 were far too high, and he thought that a revaluation would solve the problem and even up the rates. Cr. Wishart stated that he fully supported the motion, and felt that with all valuations on a 1946 footing he did not see how the council could go wrbng. Cr. Lind agreed with the previous speakers that a revaluation would be fair to all ratepayers, and place them on an even footing. If there were no objections to the new valuations, then the public would have no complaints that the rates were too high. The Mayor then put the motion to the council and it was carried unanimously that the ValuerGeneral be written to, asking that a revaluation of the borough be carried out.
