PLACINGS FOR OAMARU SEAT
By Telegraph-
OAMARU, Nov. 28. Although the preliminary connt gives Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, the sitting Labour member, a lead of 153 votes against his National opponent, Mr T. R. Beatty, in the contest for the Oamaru seat, there are approximately 900 postal and absentee votes to come'in and the final result is expected to be very close with the possibility that the placings may be reversed. The figures for the preliminary ccunt were as follow: A. H. Nordmeyer (L) 6406; T. R. Beatty (N) 6253; G. P. Cuttriss (I.Lib.) 51, As the figures indicate, the issue was fought between two parties and out of a total oi 14,200 some 12,710 electors voted.. The lead Mr. Nordmeyer established was due entirely to the large Labour vote in Port Chalmers which came into the Oamaru electorate when the boundaries fixed by the Representation Commission were altered after representations ha'd been made by Mr. Nordmeyer. The returning olficer (Mr. F. S. Collier) stated today that there were still 500 postal votes and some 400 absentee votes to come in. He added that he would not start the official count until at least a week as the roll first had to be scrutinised and declarations checked for absentee and postal votes.
