TERM OF HARD LABOUR

SUPREME COURT SENTENCE Committed from Otaki on four charges of shopbreaking and a charge of housebreaking, from Wellington on 12 charges of burglary, nine charges of housebreaking, two charges of housebreaking with intent, and a charge of theft, and from Napier on a charge of theft, Hoani Ahitana Hikamate, labourer, 31, submitted a letter asking for leniency and expressing intention to reform, when he appeared before Mr. Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. His Honour remarked that it was difficult to believe that the prisoner desired to reform, and a glance at his previous record dispelled any idea of that intention. He had been sentenced over 25 occasions for theft and breaking and entering. Any further offence might lead to deelaring • the prisoner an habitual criminal, said his Honour, who imposed sentences amounting to two and a-half years' hard labour, the terms to be concurrent. An order was made for -the return of the stolen property.
