NOXIOUS WEEDS CONTROL
POSITION OF LOCAL * BODIES The question of what action local oodies shouid take in ihe control of gorse and other noxious weeds wiihin their districts was raised at yesterday's meeting of the fioro.vneuua COunoy Council. Cr. A. J. Gimbieot said that he had been approached time apd agam to have the gorse removed xrom properoy along Koputaroa ana Foxuon Roaas. Apparently it was not generaiiy known that this was tne responsibility of the Department of Agriculture, and the county was bemg subjected to most of the Dlame. Some steps shouid be taken to bring the matter to the notice oi ohe depanment. The chairman, Mr. G. A. Monk, said that it had long been felt tiiat hie deparunent shouid be forced to Gake some action. It appeared that it did not reiish the tasx, and would be only too keen to let local bodies ittKri uver tne responsiDility of controiiing noxious weeds. The departtnenc and the Counties' Association were negotiating with a view to this, in which case a subsidy would oe prcvided by the Government. "If the control of weeds was left co the Department of Agriculture, we could say goodbye to New Zealand," Mr. Monk added. It appeared, however, that the task would eventually be taken over by the local bodies. "Tt was now only a' matter of fixing the subsidies. Meanwhile the complain't raised by Cr. Gimblett would be passed on to the Department of Agriculture for action.
