An official announcement reveals that althqugh Admiral Byrd's forthcoming expedition will be used to amplify existing scientific data on the Antarcti.', its prime pur\>ose is to train naval personnel and test ships, aircrafts anJ other military equipment under frigid conditions. Submarines, aeroplanes, helicopters, several destroyers, supplv ships and icebreakers as well as dog sleighs, will be us£d. Aircraft for shore-based fliglit operations will be flown in from an aircraft carrier when the' base is establislied on Ross shelf.
