EMPLOYMENT SURVEY
PALMERSTON NORTH DISTRlCT The half-yearly survey of iiidustry conducted by the National Employment Service in accordance with the Employment (Information) Regulations, 1946, is -in progress, and figures for the first group completed are nqw made available by the local district employment officer, Mr. L. W. Cozens. This group covers the industries of . grain milling, bread-making. cake and pastry making, other foodstuffs and beverages. Information supplied reveals that '66 uhits are employing 246 males and 82 females at the date liile of survey, October 15, 1946, representing, ffom the comihencement of the period, an incr'ease of six new indust'rial units employing additional Ctaff numbering 18, excluding working proprietors. Vacancies exist for eight males ahd nine females. Individual statistics are as follows, those shown in pafentheses being the figures at the beginning "of the period: Grain milling, males 22 (25), females 3' (3); bregd bakeries, males 92 (66) , females 13 ( 12 ) ; cake kitchens and pastry cooks, males 35 (28), females 42 (37); other foodstuffs, males 39 (38), females 19 (19); beverages, males 58 (56), females 5 (6) .
