TURAKINA TUNNEL ACCIDENT

WANGANUI, Nov. 4. One man was killed and two seri-' oUsly injured when a work train carrying workmen into Turakina railway deviation tunnel crashed into an empty spike barrel, which was lying in the middle of the track early this morning. The man killed • was Panau Tamati, married, of Ratana, and the injured were Peter Edwards, of Ratana, and Waru Mete, of Ratana. The accident occurred when a diesel locomotive nushing two trolleys was carrying the workmen into the tunnel and the leading trolley struck the empty barrel, but remained on the track. The second trolley was derailed, Mete and Edwards being thrown under the locomotive and Tamati to the side of the track.
