TRIBUTE TO LONDON

APPROYED RY COUNCIL At the fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Cauncil, held on Tuesday evening, ' a circular letter was received from the secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, pointing out that the question of some fltting tribute to the courage and fortitude of Londoners during the wai' was raised some time ago by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who subsequently advised that the people of London had been greatly heartened by the admiration expressed towards them from various local bodies in this Dominion. He felt, however, that thc settlement of any plans regarding any ' national memorial be defcrred until the end of the war. At thc last conference of th'e Municipal Association it was recornmended that the exccutive should now go into the matter furthcr. In order to enable action to be taken on the proposal accepted by the Municipal Association it is now suggested that subscriptions be invited from all boroughs and town boards on the basis of £3 per 1000 of population. If this amounl is subscribed generally a fund of , £2500 sliould be obtained. A suggestion had been made that the Lord Mayor of Lond.on should be approached and asked whether it would be possible to have the bare structure of a room in the Guildhall panelled and furnished with tables and chairs in Nev/ Zealand materials. The idea would be to have a memorial plaque inscribed with a tribute from the New Zealand local bodies to the local bodies in London. Tlie room eould be eitlier a committee roora pr a waiting room, which could be appropriabely named to connect it with New Zealand. The circular concluded by asking if tlie council would subscribe for a memorial as suggested, on condition that such contributions were validated by legislation. Following a discussion the subject met with the approval of the council.
