SUCCESSFUL BAZAAR

OTAKI PLUNKET SOCIETY The president of the QtakVpiun- : ket Society (Mrs. Morton) ,' -backed up "by an energetic committee and with the -help of other willing workers and the fine assistance oi the secretary (Mrs. Mortiboy) , are to be heartily congratulated ;on the success of this year's effort towards raising money to meet expenses incurred in connection with the : society. Favoured with lovely , weather, the reverse from last year, there was a good attendance of the general public, and it was indeed gratifying to the society to see so many buyers. The stalls, when the bazaar opened, were well laden with articles of an attractive nature, and at prices that were tempting. It was, therefore, no wonder that the stalls were quickly depleted- of most of the goods, many of which had been made by members of the committee, with the help of those who have the interests of the society at heart. The fancy stall, as usual, was a very attractive one, and the articles ■ offered were tempting. Those in charge were Mesdames . Tooby, Potham and Southcombe. The produce stall showed what growers of Otaki can produce, and here the vegetables on display sold readily. Mesdames Rule, Saunders and Reid were in charge. The cake stall, always a pleasing one, was in the hands of Mesdames Elliott- and Moss, and Miss D'Ath, and the goods offered sold readily. The jumble stall was heavily stocked, but before the afternoon was lar advanced most of the articles were quitted. Conducting it were Mesdames Williams and Nicolson, and Misses Holmes and Roiri. The fiower stall, attractively arranged on the stage, was a credit. to Mesdames Kirkwood and E., Edwards. Afternoon tea naturally attracted nearly all present, and the delicious cakes were fully appreciated. Mesdames Lumley, Harrington and Garrity, and Miss M. Holmes, wpre attentive to patrons. During the afternoon the popular president, Mrs. Morton, before callmg on Mrs. Monk to officially open ihe bazaar, stated how please.d she was to see such a large attendance, and extended hearty thanks to her committee and other willing assistants. Mrs. Morton expressed pleasure at the presence of Mrs. Monk, president of the Coastal Towns branch of the society, and said she had much pleasure in ask.ing her to officially. . .open-:*. .the bazaar. (Applause) . , Mrs. Monk, after thanking the president and committee for- the invitation extended to her to be present, pointed out that the district covered was a large one, embracing the area from Otaki to Johnsonville, while the expense of running the various branches was substantial, no less than a sum of £100 being needed for Otaki alone. Mrs. Monk had no doubt but that this amount would be raised. She congratulated the society on its work and the display made -that day, which she regarded as very pleasing and a credit to all who had in any way assisted. It was pleasing to know all societies on. the coast had the warm support of the public, while it had been recognised in Government circles that the control of societies was more efficiently carried out than if in- the hands of the Government. It was pointed out that salaries had been increased, while it was gratifying 1 o know that as the result of -the nclp accorded the society expenses had been met. In making further cference to the stalls, Mrs. Monk iiientioned the fine work which had been accomplished, and said she had no doubt but that all present would dig deep into their pockets. Amidst applause Mrs. Monk declared the bazaar officially opened.
