EFFECTS OF COAL SHORTAGE Received Friday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 10. Tlie steel supply oi' Britain is beeoming inereasingiy tight thougli not th rough failure in steel production, states the statistieal bulletin of the, British Iron and Steel Federation. Thn ingot rate of steel production lias 111ereased to an annual rate of 12,900,000 tons in the first half year compared with 11,900,000 last year. This rate is tlie maxiniurn whieh can be produeed with the present eoal supplies. The two main faetors in tlie situation are the demand for finished steel produets and Ihe failure of imports. There is an overftll world shortage of 'steel and eoal, the shortage preveutiug (.'ontinental countries from showing a surplus. American steel production is being heavilv absorbed.
