CUTTING OF KAURI FORESTS

STRONG PROTEST MADE WHANGAREI, Oct. 9. Last evening a well-attended meeting representative of the Chamber of Commerce, Progressive Association, Gardening Club and the general pubiic passed a resolution protesting against the cutting of selected kauris in the Waipoua Forest, requesting the Government to declare the forest a national park and urging that the State Forestry Department at once cease operations. The meeting was addressed by Professor McGregor, professor of zoology at the Auckland University College, who, by means of lantern slides and forcible word pictures. made an appeal for determined efforts to save a forest the like of which cannot be found elsewhere in the world. Professor McGregor strongly condemned the cutting of trees and consequent destruction of much uhdergrowth and young kauris. This practice he declared to be as foolish as it was barbaric.
