OTAKI DRAGLINE EXCAVATOR
USE WITIIIN FORTNIGHT The Otaki dragline excavator will probably be in use within a fortnight. / The Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, said this during the Estimates debate in the House of Representaoives this week. Information about the dragline cxcavators imported for river works was sought by Mr. V/. Sullivan (N., Bay of Pienty) . He asked when the one at Otaki would be In use, how many mere were and what they had c'ost. There were three dragline machines in New Zealand, bought in Canada, said the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple. The first would be working on the Otaki river within a fortnight. There was nothing else like them in the Southern Hemisphere, • The Otaki one had been held up for electrical repairs. The machines would clear rivers to give outlets to the sea, Mr. Semple said. Each would shift 1,000,000 tons cf spoil a year. With installation, each machine would cost £35,000. They would ;ave thousands of acres of soil. "I would not have recommended Ihe spending of that, money if I had known of any other method of fiearing rivers," Mr. Semple told nterj ectors.
