BOWLING OPENING
PARAPARAUMU BRANCH CLUB The Paraparaumu Beach Bowling Club successfully opened its eight season on Saturday last. Visitors were present from all parts of the Wellington district, and representatives from the Wellington Bowling Centre of the New "Zealand Bowling Council were also present. Mr. W. J. McCulloch, president of the club, after weicoming the visitors, invited Mr. Hadwin, president of the Wellington Bowling Centre, to declare the greens open for play. Mrs. McCulloch put up the first jack and Mr. W, Knight the first bowl. Both greens were occupied by seventy-nine players, just one short of twenty fours taking part in the afternoon's activities. Although the day remained fine the temperature dropped considerably about four o'clock, and by 4.30 players decided to call it a day. However, all present appeared to enjoy their bowling and both greens were in exceptionally good order. The large gathering of bowlers and ladies entailed a great effort by those ladies who had charge of the afternoon tea arrangements, and the ladies' bowling section, led by Mrs. P. Wylie, their- secretary, deserved the praise of all present. On Sunday afternoon about twenty liardy spirits, including a team from Johnsonville and a player from Paekakariki, faced the' strong and very cold southerly and had a roll up, overcoats being worn by most players.
