Warnock, who have been on a holiday to Auckland ; and Rotorua, have again taken up residence at Manaia. .Mr. and Mrs. "Hec" Merrylees, who have been on "ti visit to Tauranga, have returned to Dannevirke. Mrs. Fred Edwards,' who underwent an operation at Bowen Street Hospital yesterday, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. The Rev. F. C. Long is shortly retiring from his position as general secretary of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions to live at Raumati South, where his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wakelin, reside. Fire at Kapiti Island The large and imposing 12roomed house on Kapiti Isl&nd, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Mike Webber, was completely demolished by fire on Monday night. The owner of the house was away at the time and the origin of the fire is a mystery. Nothing was savcd, cvcn the valuable Maori carvings being destroyed. Card Evening Another successful card evcning, organised by All Saints' Ladies' Guild, was held in the Parish Hall on Monday. Bowis of spring flowers were used for decorations and a delicious supper was served during the evening. There were six tables of bridge, four of 500 and two of Mah Jong. The prize winners were: — Bridge, Miss Clarke; hidden number, Mrs. Hull; 500, Mrs. Housiaux; consolaiion, Mr. Berry; mah jong, Mrs. Turner; consolation, Miss Jarman. Church Repair Work At a meeting of the Church Committee held on August 1 collectors were appointed to collect in Paekakariki for the . vicarage repairs fund. The insurances on church proper'ty came under discus^i'oh, with'" a"vieW to o'btaihihg increased cover on the church hall, which, it was felt, was inadequately insured. The church hall is a popular rendezvous for cinemagoers on two nights of the week, and in size it is admirably suited to the purpose; after the recent decorations it has a beautiful appearance, and with its very comfortable seating accommodation, it rises to the grandeur of a cinema-de-luxe.
