LEVIN TRAMPERS MEET

SPORTS COUNCIL SUPPORTED The August monthly meeting of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club was held on Tuesday evening, che president (Mr. N. M. Thomson; presiding. There was an attend^ ance of some 30 members. Before the business was commenced a motion of sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Lancaster in the. death of their son, Stephen, was passed, all present standing in silence. Consideration was first given to che club's ski-ing trip to Rangiwahia, which had been postponed on August 11 because of an absence of snow there. It was agreed that this now be held on September 8 regardless of weather conditions, leaving the bus stop at 5.30 a.m. A working trip on the Waiopehu Track was arranged for August 31, leaving the post office between 8 and 8.15 a.m. Mr. R. Speedy was appointed leader. The chairman suggested^ that members organise working parties among themselves at more frequent intervals, thus speeding up the re-opening of the track. Five new members were nominated and elected, bringing the total to 72. The president advised that he had written to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) in regard to the availability of an aircraft for transporting the materials for the new Waiopehu Hut to near the site, and dropping them from the air. So far he had not received a reply, but it would probably. be to hand before the next meeting. Mr. W. H. Ransom, who with the secretary (Mr. G. H. Kerslake) recently attended a meeting to consider the setting up of a council of sport in Levin, explained the work of such a council. The club decided to support the formation of the council, and Mr. Ransom and the secretary were deputed to attend the further meeting of delegates of sports bodies on September 25, when the proposal will be finalised. A reminder was given of the need for parties to be careful at -this time of the year, when lambjng was in full swing, not to unnecessarily disturb stock when passing over private property. The desirability of using gates whenever these were available, instead of climbing over fences, was also emphasised again. After the business had- been dealt with the lady members dispensed supper.
