OBITUARY
MR. STEPHEN LANCASTER The news of the death of Mr. Ste'phen 'Lancaster, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Lancaster, of Fairfield, yhich occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital this week, came as a profound shock to thie family 's wide circle of friends througho.ut Levin and district and the "Manawatm He was taken seriously and suddenly ill two weeks ago, and was removed to hpspital 'at the end of last week, but his epndition became \yorse and he passed aw^y on . Tuesday mpriir ing. Stephen was born at Levin 19 years ago. He was educated at' the Levin Primary School, at whicn he won the honour of dux in 1939- He went on to Horowhenua College for twelve mopths and then to Feilding Agricultural High School, where he was a pupil for two' years. There he played rugby footbail for the school's ' first fifteen, while his academic "attainments indicated a briglit future for him in the agricultural sphere." On leaving school in 1942 he commenced 'work on his father's farmV The deceased young man took an avid interest in the Yoqng Farmers' movemept; he was secretary "of the Levin C\ub for two years, carrymg out the work in a manner which brought general praise,' aiid reli'nquished the position at the last annual meeting to become the club's Press correspondent. lie was also a member of the Horowhenua College Old Pupils' Asso.ciation, the Levin .Tunio.r bvanch of the National Party and the Horowhenua Jersey Cattle Breeders' Club, and a junior member of the Hprowhenua A. and P. Association. In these organisations his cheerful outlpok made him many friends. by all of whom his untimely passing is greatly deplored. Left to mourn their sad loss are his parents and one sister, Mrs. F. J. Rolston, and one brother, Mr. T. Lancaster." They have been the recipients of a wealth of sympathy in their sad' bereavement. The funeral took place at Levin yesterday when a large and reprcsentative gathering of mourners assembled to pay their last tribute to Stephen's memory, some 80 cars compri^ing the cprtege. A service at his late home was 'conducted by the Rev. H. S. Kings, who later officiated at the gravesidc. The pall-bearers at the house were the deceased young man's brother, Mr. T. Lancaster, cousins, Messrs. J. Lancasterj T. A. and G. H. Kerslakp and A. Lancaster (Glen Oroua) , and Mr. I. Campbell. At the cemetery the cask'et wa^ bornc by Messrs. C. E. C. Webb (Federated Farmers) , D. K. Guv (Levin Dairy Gompany), W. lyieddings (Levin R.S.A.), I. D,. Rarspus (HoroVhpnua Jersey Cattle Brppd-ei-s' Club) , " J. A. Kilsby (Hprowhenua* A. and Pi- Ass'ociatipn) aqd M. Rolston (Levin ^"oung Farmers' Club) . The fioral emblems which covered the casket were exceedingly beautiful and numerous, bearing testimony to the esteerp in which the deceaseb young man was held. They included tributes from t)ie Horowhenua Jersey Cattle Breeders' Club, Ihakara Women's Institute, Levin branch of Federated Farmers", Levin Junipr branch of W.D.F.U., Levin Young Farmers' Club, Horowhenua A. and P. Association, Levin Dairy Gompany, Athletic Footbail Club, the former Levin W.D.F.U., Levin Women's Division of Federated Farmers, Levin R.S.A. and Levin Rehabiytation Committee.
