SHOWING CULTURAL SIDE OF EDUCATION

COLLEGE CONCERT THIS WEEK Every year the Horowhenua Collegq pupils show the public that the cultural side of education is not neglected. This is done by the staging of a concert. the entire programme of which is presented by the pupils. In the past these concerts have been very successful, proving to parents in particular that the pupils are capable of providing an enjoyable and intelli-gently-presented evening's entertainment. It is anticipated that this year's effort," which takes :place in the eollege assembly hall on Thursday and Friday evening next, commencing at 8 p.m., will be of the same high standard. The first half of the programme will consist of choir singing, the ever popular gymnastic display, a ,play by boys, and an item by the Maori pupils. The entire second half is being devoted to a musical pageant play, "Cathedral Steps," which was written in London by Clemence Dane and was originally produced there by Basil Dean. "Cathedral Steps" was played on the steps of the biitzed cathedrals of England during the war period, and it occupied a large part in strengthening the morale of the Britisn people. It is the story of great men and women from England's past, who live again some vital episode which occurred during their own particular lifetime, and which helped to build England's greatness. The audience will realise the importance of these incidents as the . pageantry. of England's history from the-- time of the Magna Carta ; to the present " day is unfolded before them. Over -70' pupils take ; part in this play, which -is the big- : gest th6 collega-has yet attempted. The majority of' the costumes are supplied by the eollege and all who intend seeing the concert are assured of a bright evening's enter - i tainment.
