IHAKARA'S MEETING
Despite the very inclement weather, there was a good attendance of members at the August meeting of the Ihakara Women's Institute, Mrs. Mark presiding. Letters expressing thanks for cakes received were read from two servicemen in Japan, Pte. Turner and Sapper Rolston. Members decided to send a parcel of foodstuffs to the institute's link in Engiand, Hatfield-Hyde. Mrs. Brooks was appointed to take charge of subscriptions from members of the Red Cross. The... prize- donated. by Mrs Axup was won by L. "ZaloumV- Mrs. Gardiner , delegate at-v . the recetit conference held in Wellington, gave a very interesting report on _ t.lle proceedings and th^ business transacted. The guest speaker for the afternoon was Mr. W. J. Guinan, district health inspector. He dealt with the prevailing sicknesses in the community, period of isolation for contagious and infectious diseases. how to keep the home healthy and hygienic, and the importance of having a water supply free from contamination. Mr. Guinan was accorded a vote of thanks for his highly instructive talk. The winners of the monthly competitions were: — Flower: Mrs Bowker and Ml's. Brooks 1, Mrs Hudson 2, Miss Forsyth and Mrs Henderson 3. Shrub: Mrs. J. H Rolston 1, Mrs. Hall 2, Mrs. Elliott 3. Vegetable: Mrs. Brooks 1, Mrs Turner 2. Points: Mrs. Trotter 1 Mrs. Butt 2, Mrs. Ian Taylor 3The bring-and-buy stall was condflcted by Mesdames Bowkei and Butt, and the usual daintj afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Lancaster anc Hall.
