Personal Mr. and Mrs. Don. Grant, after a motor tour of the North, afe at present ' visiting friends in the Wairarapa. Mr. Schwartz, of Wellington, was among the week-end visitors ro Otaki. Mr. Amos also visited Otaki during the week. , On August 11 the present Bishop of Vvrellington (the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland) will be farewelled by his Maori people at Raukawa, Otaki.
The engagement is announced ot Steila, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Bartosh, of Hukunui, ana Francis, son of Mr, and Mrs. Hand, of Paraparaumu. The engagement is also announced of Mr. Frank Heffer, son ox Mr. Harry Heft'er, of Waikanae, to Miss Jean Jones, of /Auckland. Another lengagen^ent !is that of Miss Nina Milicent, elder S daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Howell, of Paraparaumu, and Mr. Henry Barry Gray, only son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Hadfield. of Paraparaumu. On Thursday night at the Anglican Hall, the Otaki Textiles, Ltd., entcrtained Mr. J. Stevenson and |Miss Betty Collis, who were married on Saturday last, at a social evening. The function proved very enjoyable. Mr. J. Bartosh extended a welcome to those in attendance, while Miss Thomas. on behalf of the staff. in a nicely-worded speech, made a presentation to Miss Collis, Mr. Stevenson replying on her behalf. The evening was spent in dancing to music by Mr. Pat Sharp. Mr. Bartosh was M.C. Four Weddings on Saturday No less than four weadings were solemnised in Otaki on Saturday, well-known residents being joined in bonds of holy matrimony in the presence of many relatives and friends.
Memorial Hall At a well-attended meeting of the Otaki branch of the R.S.A. on Saturday night, it was decided not to purchase or take part in the purchase of the Railway Hall for the purposes of a wai* memorial. out it was agreed to assisu in the purchase of a suitable section and also in raising funds. Fence at Domain At last, * after a great deal of controversy, a fence has been erected on the Otaki Domain to keep spectarors from encroaching on thc field of play. On Saturday, however, it was not needed, the1 threatening weather sending spectators to the shelter of the grandstand. Snooker Tournament A very pleasant evening was spent at the Otaki Fire Station on Saturday night, when a snooker tournament was played between members of the locai brigade ancl representatives of the Shannon Brigade. Some'" of the games were ciosely contested, but the final was in favour of the visitors by five games to two. Both sides afterwards met. at supper, which was appreciated. Sports Dance The Aces Basketball Club held a most enjoyable dance at the Railway Hall on Friday night, when there was a large gathering, many coming from a distance to participate. The arrangements were in excellent hands, members of the club doing all possible for those attending, while Mel Creighton's orchestra of five piayers provided the best of music. Decorations were on a very pleasing scale, and most favourable comments on the work were passed. Farewell to Bishop Speaking at the farewell to Bishop Holland at Wellington the Rev. Paora Temuera, of Otaki, recallecl that he had been the first Maori who had made the Bishop's acqnaintance, also that the Bishop's first act, following his consecration, had been to preach in "Rangiatea," his church at Otaki. Further more, one of his last official acts would be to take farewell of the Maori people of the! Dioccse at Otaki on August 11. J Bishop Holland's sympathetic 1 understanding of Maori problems, and regard for the welfare of the people, had won their love.
