RED CROSS SOCIETY
SHANNON SUB-CENTRE MEETS The monthly meeting of the Shannon sub-centre of the Red Cross was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. S. Barber presided. Those present were Mesdames J. Griffiths, J. T. Bovis, J. Campbell, E. Chester, Hateley and J. A. Creagh (secretary). Apologies for. absence were received from Mesdames Wylie and Buriing. The secretary reported that a collection of donated food for Britain had been made, and twentytwo tins of fbod had been .coilected from the Red Cross boxes in the various grocery establishments in Shannon. These had been dispatched and a letter of acknowljdgment and thanks to the people of Shannon had been received from the Manawatu centre of the Red Cross. It was decided to make another collection. A letter of thanks was received from the s.ister-in-charge of the Ajvapmii 4 Hospital .for the gifts of eggs ahd' ja'rn sent to the patients. Since the last meeting 12 new mem£>ers bgen pnrolled !and committee members were greatly encouraged. It. was announceed that the winner of ' the Red Cross competition was Dempsey Williams, of the McKenny Ward of the Wanganui Hospital, and the prize was a lady's hand-knitted cardigan. Advice had been received from Palmerston North that arrangements were in hand for the formation of a concert party, for wliich the best possible talent was being secured. The concert party would visit Shannon at a later date. The committee decided to continue endeavouring to collect comforts for the patients at the Awapuni Hospital.
