AUCKLAND, June 26. The statement tliat the appointment of Mr. A. Tyrer as conductor of the new Nalionai yymphony Orchestra was purely political, was made by Professor A. C. Iveys, president of the Aucklafid Chamher JMusic yociety this morning. ILe said the appointment had been done in quite the wrong way, in that the jjosition was not advertised, and tlierefore Mr. Tyrer got the job witliout competition. Mr. C. Muston, the conductor of the Auckland > Clioral Society and the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, said that tlie only grievance of musicians was that the appointment was not advertised. At the same timo he did not think anyonc in Australia or New Zealand would have accepted ,it. He said that AI r. Tyrer was a competent man, and so far as lu's ap])ointment eoneenjed musicians in New Zealand he had no axe to grind. Mr. J. Leigh ton, the president of the Auckland Society of Music Teachers, said that as far as he could judge Mr. Tyrer had been appointed to train the orchestra, and he thought that after that had been done endeavours would be made to obtain guest conductors.
