MrS. Norman Thornley is progressing fayourably after an operacion on Wednesday at Aorangi Private Hospitai, Palmerston North. Major-General N. W.*Weir, Chief of the New Zealand General Staff, will represent New Zealand at the conference of Chiefs of Staff of the British Dominions called by Field"Marshal Lord Montgomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff. The nomination of Mr. Jack •Acland, M.P., for Temuka electorate, which disappeared with the boundary charges, was the only one received by the National Party ror the Timaru seat and will be their candidate at the general election. The seat is at present held for Labour by Mr. Clyde Carr. The O.B.E. has been awarded in the Birthday Honours to the New Zealand Shipping Coy. officers, Captain G. Kinnel, the master of the Rangitata, and Mr. W. G. MacEwen, the chief engineer officer of the Kent, and to Miss Jean Begg, of Dunedin, the director of the Y.W.C.A. welfare services in India under the South-East Asia Command. ____________
