The ITouse Apfiropriations Comiiiittee made substantial cluiiiges in President Tninian's Biulget proposals almost doubliiig the aiuount requested for the Arniy's atoniic dcveloprnerit, approjiriatiiig 275, 000, 000 dollars instead or 2H0,O(H), Oi )() and reducing the allotmeni for foreign relief from 500, 000, 0(h) dollars to 250,000,000 dollars. The committee explainod that the larger aniouut for atomic developrnent wouid permit vigorous research into tliis lunv lield of power. I11 cutting the foreign relief appropriation for food for the - conquered couritries, the coininittce explained that favouraiile erop conditions abi'oad wouid reduce the need for lafge expenditures 011 food. Army appropriations as approved totalled 7, 001,024, 700 dollars, the largest jieace-time budgot over submitted.
