GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLES
MASTER MERUIT PROMISES WELL Master Meruit, winner of the Wellington Grand National Steeples lias shov/n brilliant schooling, and it looks as though he will be the favourite and winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase on Monday. Although Town Survey has not shown any promise this season, he was one of the best about three seasons ago, and is still capable of surprising if improved. Ramillies, 'who has shown consistency this season, may be considered as a prospect, although to-day's event may be his task. New Battle nas disappointed lately, and although he' is capable of surprising his recent form does not indicate this. Diamond King may find the opposition too strong, although northern critics say he is worth rerpembering. Brookby Song is one of 'ihe most improved horses in the north, and it would be wise to respect him; Ballyneety, who runs to-day, may make the steeples his main target; whether he is capable or not is unknown, but he has quite good form to go by. Jehangir may find the opposition too strong. Abbey Lu seems to have lost all form although he has shown improvement in his work lately. Tapgirere is a great' jumper and his pace is brilliant for a jumpei, although his main trouble will be the distance. Haereatu js just returnmg to racing and it'.is thought that his form will not be^strong enough for him to win this event. Bronze Night andYank are both very good jumpers, but stamina ability may be their trouble.
