DIPLOMATIC POSTS OPEN TO WOMEN
The Government has decided to lift the ban on women in Britain's foreign service and they will be equally eligible with men for diplomatic posts. Announcing the decision in the House of Commons Mr. Ernest Bevin said that a marriage bar will be imposed which he would have power to waiye in certain circumstances. The step follows the report of a committee presided over by Sir Ernest Gowers. "We have accepted the committee's recommendations that when making appointments to posts abroad women should be eligible equally with men for both diplomatic and consular posts," Mr. Bevin said. When he was asked how the marriage bar would be operated, Mr. Bevin said, "It is & \very difficult problem." '
