CHRISTCHURCH, May 24. A new cliapter in the history of pro pertv deals in New Zealand began in Christchurch yesterday afternoon when tlie purchaser of a St. Albans house be ing sold by auction was selected by ballot. The nanie of the buver Avas picked out of a hat. The auctioneer stoppe 1 the bidding when he thought it luiil reached a reasonable limit and then called for the names of intending purchasers at that figure. The names wer" •vvritten on slips of paper — there were 11 prospective buyer.s — and a woman in the crowd picked out the winning entry, the lucky slip of paper beariin, the name of a retumed serviceman. "My reason is that the Land Saies Committees throughout New Zealand have decided, rightly or wrongly, that where a fictitious price is fixed for pro pertv'-sold at auction the application for the sale will .be disallowed ot thrown out," said the auctioneer "They have asked that a reasonab'le price be fixed at auctions."
