WELLINGTON, May 23. The announeement that the GisborneEast Coast Motor Company had been acquired by tlie Eoad Transport braneh of the Railwavs Department and will be operated by it from June 2, was made todav by the Minister of Railwavs, Hon. R. Semple. This service has for many years given communieation from Gisborne for about 130 milcs up the l-last Coast to Hieks Bay. Tts own- : ers, -RaidMMr. Semple, made a voluntary offer to. the department and a purcliasc ; .price was niufuallv agreed 011. That !?iad ibeeh tlie procedure in all the department 's purchases of road passenger services. The company 's staff was also being engaged. It was intended to operate tlie present services until tlie department had had sufficient experiience to deeide upon the question of any improvements. Another purchase by the Bnihvays Department was that of the Auckland Transport Company which condiicfed the road transport service from Auckland to Paeroa and Waihi. This was acquired under a voluntary agreement and the department would commence to operate 011 June N0, emploving the present staff. Improvements would be made to the service.
