SAFE BREAKERS MAKE QUICK GETAWAY
CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. Safe breakers, who made an unsuceessful attenipt to rob a • safe at tlie Hororata Bost Oflice in the early liours of this niorning,- were very" nearly eaught in the act wlien a woman telephone exchange assistant arrived for duty at 6 p'clbck. Slie found.that a half-eh'cle had been burnt out ,of the safe round the comliination lock, probably with a gas burner similar to the tvpe used by mechanics for welding. The safe was red hot indicating that the cracksmen had been at worlc-*on4y a few minutes before. Footprints 011 the floor round the safe were still wet. It was dmzling in Hororata at the time. It appeated the cracksmen were interrupted as they obviously made off in a huri-y. They left through ihe front .door, Avhich Was wide open .when the exeliange assistant arrived. Entrance to the Post jQfhce was gained by foi'cing open a window at the side' of the buihling. Nobody lives on the premises.
