HASTINGS, May 23. Table potatoes are in extremely short supply in Hawke's Bay and because of the failuve of tlie Hawke's Bay maincrop potatoes and the inability of ships to uplift adequate quantities from the j South Island ports, ma.nv retailers are 1 without supplies. The shortage will I continue until shipping is available to uplift sivfficient supplies to meet j Hawke's Bay requirements. When | Hawke's Bay potatoes began fo run | fthoi't, mercliants received supplies for| a time from the krauawatu and Hangi- j tilcei which, liowever, were cut out suddenly. Tlie last sliip to arrive from the south brought only about half the quantitv of potatoes required to meet the demands. It is expected it will be another 10 davs at least before a fnr-' tlier shipnient arrives. ktanv retailers have already exhausted tlieir supplies aiul existing shipping, it is said, is quite incapable of keeping paee with requirements especially while the elamour for spaee for stock fodder continnes and largc quantities of other consigned goods await shipnient from Routli Island ports.
