FOSTERING TABLE TENNIS

"We are trying to foster table ten nis in New Zealand on an unprecedtnted scale," said Mr. N. Bailinger, socretary of tlie N.Z.T.T.A., in a stateuient iast week. He was • discussiug tlie recen^ anuouiiceinent of the eontrolling /body abuut ieadiug players giving exliibirions in dift'erent centres. '•'The poliey this winter is to introduce the sport into new centres," he continued. "We are not, in the meantime, wori'ying about inviting overseas piayers to New Zealand or sending a team of our own away. " Much could bc- done for the game in New. Zealand. "The present plan for the touring of New Zealand by Ieadiug players accompaMed'by managers ( \yho are to leeture at each town visitedj was mapped out duriug .the war years, ' ' he continued. "Gonsequcntly we are to make an early start with the plan now." The Iirst assiguinent, covering the WaikatoKing Country district, would be undertaken at the end of the present month, the towns earmarked for attention by the touring party (P. Dudleyj manager, G. Corbett, and L. Howe, being Hamilton, Morrinsville, Matamata, Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and Taihape. The soutliern part of tlie North lsland, embracing hlasterton, Carterton, Pahiatua, and Palmerston North, is to bc covered by B. T. Pegler (manager) and the well known Technical Glub players, Max Gosling and John Crossley. The former is recognised as one of New Zealand 's leatliiig players. Crossley is a young pla}rer who came into prominence in 1944, when he captured the Wellington singles title. Both men play an open game. Here again the N.Z.T.T.A. has shown good judgment in matehing.
