TRANSPORT BREACHES
OTAKI COMPANY FINED Two charges of exc'eeding ^their heavy traffic license and two charges of exceeding their load limitation were preferred against; the Edwards Transport Company in ,the Otaki Court yesterday. Messrs. H. Jepson and F. W. Critchley, J.'s.P., were on the Bench. Mr., B. H. Rhodes appeared for the defendant company. ■ Inspector Wilson gave evidence as to stopping the drivers of the trucks. when he found that there, was an excessive . loading, which made a difference in fees of £3 3s on each. Mr. Rhodes pleaded extenuating circumstances, and added that the defendants had a good record,'but had found it, .diiflcult to check on the overloading as- there was a good deal of produce. Further, they had not been given an opportunity of checking up. They had not received a notice regarding the complaint, and had they done so they would have immediately checked up.' It was not a case, he contended, of gross overloading, and not a serious breach. He suggested the case be met with a light penalty. As for the tare weight, he contended that the load was tried on one tyre only, which had to take the strain of two. This was a case, he thought, which could be met with a conviction only, with costs. Inspector Wilson contended that the company had had a chance of checking up. His check had been : carefully made'. I Fines of £2 011 each of the first { two charges, with 10s costs, were iinflicted, while 011 the remaimng j charges the company was ordered j to pay 10s costs.
