Personal Mr. Ray Downes has returned home after undergoing an operation in the Palmerston North Hospital. Mrs. F. Tayior, who has been the guest of Tier sister, Mrs. R. Sands, returned to her home in Pahautanui on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson,„of Buckley, left Shannon to-day ..and propose staying with Mr. .Johnson's parents at Mangaweka for a' while. Miss Muriel Munford, Oi the. Shannon School staff, was at short notice transferred to the Silverstream School. Miss Munford left to take up her new position last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Alexander, of Palmerston North, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Colin Edwards over the week-end. Mr. Alexander is well known to-many local returned men as he was an officer in the 22nd Battalion in Italy. JThe sale of Mr. H. Easton's river farm at Buckley has been completed and the new owner, Mr. O. Fields, of Wellington, went into 'residdnce there early in the month. Assisting Mr. Fields in runnipg the farm are his son, Mr. R. Fields, and Mr. G. Johnson, of Wellington. Mr. R. Fields has only recently been discharged from the Australian Army: ' Lawn Tennis The Opiki Tennis Club played a match against St. Peter's 'at'. Palmerston North recently, St. Peter's team winning by 10 games" to 6. W.I. Garden Circle The Opiki Women's Institute gardening circle, with Mrs. Wilde as leader, Mrs. Somes as judge and Mrs. Larsen as steward, met at Mrs. Wilde's residence when the competitions for the year were drawn up. It was resolved to hold stalls in May, July and October. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided to carry on with the flower shows in the Tokomaru Hall. The date for the next show was flxed for- Saturday, September 14. Rain Spoils Sports Rain interfered with most'sporting activities in Shannon over the week-end. The bowling match arranged for Saturday afternoon between Levin and Shannon was postponed. A number of local cricketers went to Levin on Saturday afternoon . to play in the North— South match, 'but the game was not played. On Sunday goifing enthusiasts were' abie to play a round on the Buckley links between showers. The only sport not interupted by the weather was the badminton practice, which was held in the Druids' Hall during the' week-end, and was largely attended.
