— ♦— A private motion picture screening was given by Mr. Mervyn Taylor to a number of friends in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Burling on a recent evening. ' Mr. Tayior, who was for a number of years a resident of Shannon, and who now lives in Wellington, was before the war an amateur radio transmitting operator, but owing to his activities in radio being restricted during the war 'he turned his activities to making motion pictures as a hobby. Being a keen tramper and deer stalker the " idea of having a permanent photographic record of the various trips possible in the Tararua mountains and foothills. was evolved with the help of two companions and a movie camera. Some hundreds of feet of 8 m.m. film with titles and sub-titles of explanatory information accompanied by suitable music from a pick up and ^mplifler, were shown. The pictures were remarkably clear, the stalked deer being easily discernible at a great distance. The first reel shown was in summer time when the trip was made from the Ohau Pipe Bridge to Te Matawai Hut, to Pukematawai Peak, Arete, Lancaster, Thompson and Dundas peaks. Stops at the huts were shown and the arduous stalking, shooting and skinning of deer in detail was depicted. In summer time the bareness and steepness of the country has to be seen to be realised, when eovered with snow as shown in a following reel over the same trip it was very beautiful. Trip two was from Masterton to Mt. Holdsworth, via -Geqtle Annie, to pig flat, where goats were seen, then to Powell Memorial Hut and so to the top. This was a winter expedition. The third trip was again from Masterton to The Pines (end of road) , and so to Mitre Flat's Hut to the camp, and from there to Peggy's Peak and Mitre Peak (5154 ft). The fourth trip took in Otaki Forks, Field's Hut, West Peak, Kime Hut, Mt. Hector and return. Trip number five was from Kaitoke to Puffer J3addle, Smith's creek, Tauh'erinikau Hut up to Tauherenikau river to Block '16 track, Merchant Ridge, Omega, across Hell's Gate to- Alpha Hut and Alpha summit and the return trip along Merchant Ridge. The final trip was from Wainui-o-mata along the five mile track to the Orongaronga River, up the river to Boulder C.reek to the summit of Mt. Mathews and return.
