auoivijand, April 1. Although for a few the parting was an emotional one, the sailing for San Franc-isco this afternoon of the liner Monterey was marked by gaiety. Tlie Monterey vvas canying 230 wives and children of United Stales servicemen, and the partv of travellers to the new land were farewelled by about 2000 people, the sailing being reminiscent of the pre-war heyday of sea voyaging. Streamers and confetti were in abunclance and some time before the gangway vvas lowered, dozens of boxes of flowers were taken aboard and added y.et' another note of c-olour to the buoyant scene. The majority of the visitors to the liner 's berth at Prince's wharf waiteti for some hours and most of the brides remained 011 tlie tlecks to call their Jast messages, yhich were hardly heard through the noise of the rarewells below.
