GOVERNOR OF N.S.W.
GEN. NORTHCOTT'S POST SYDNEY, April 1. | Lieut-General John Nortbcott, the j present commander of the British Oc-j cupation Forces in Japan, has been appointed Governor of New S-uth Wales. He will take up his new appcintment when he can be released from his present post. Referring to the appointment, the j Daily Telegraph says that the Premier (Mr; McKell) deservecl congratulations cn two counts. Firstly, he establishes the State Government 's right to submit recommendations directly to the King, without first securing the paternal approv^l of the Dominions Office; secondly, v/ith that point won lie does not yield to temptation to make the appointment an opportunistic or political oue. The only other Australian to hold a Vice-Regal position was Sir Isaac Isaacs as the Governor-General appointed by Mf. Scullin. The Sydney Morning Herald notes that the appointment will mean a withdrawal of the Empire Commander in Japan, only a few months after commencing his duties, and states that the policy of appointing Australians as the King's representatives will be strongly questioned.
